100% Irish Probably the best, most poignant example of the “tries to be tough but is just a big ol’ softy” trope I’ve ever seen. Plus, he is a Chronic Overachiever™ and hugely image-driven. But seriously, watching this boy transform from solitary, self-loathing abuse victim (Book 1) to fulfilled and contented individual who can accept love on its own terms (Book 4) is a pretty sweet victory. HAS THE MOST DRAMATIC ARC OF THE SERIES AND IT MAKES ME EMOTIONAL AND I’M SO PROUD OF MY SON. Normal, right? Of course it’s normal! The kiddo who started it all by accidentally dying of hornet stings at age 10 and THEN getting magically resuscitated and hearing a weird voice in his head saying it’s all because of that dead Welsh king fella. So, here’s everything I love about The Raven Cycle, henceforth known as TRC ’cause I’m a real lazy typist. It follows five ‘normal’ (heh) teenagers on their search for a dead Welsh king who’s supposed to grant some favor to the guy who wakes him from his centuries-long magic sleep. For starters, it’s set in a fantasy version of modern-day rural Virginia, where demons roam and dreams come to life and all that good stuff. It’s hard to say what The Raven Cycle is about.
